NDIANAPOLIS -- The Lake County Board of Elections and Registration, now starting to purge its admittedly bloated voter registration rolls, insists on doing the job in secret.

The board last week denied The Times an electronic copy of its 369,511-record registration database based on a resolution it quietly passed in September of last year. Instead, it offered to print this public information from the database to 13,736 pages of paper for $3,294.

The voter registration database contains the following information:
-- voter name
-- voter identification number
-- address
-- date of birth
-- phone number (in some cases)
-- first voting registration date
-- voting record, marked by a present vote in general elections and a D or R in primaries
-- drivers license number, partial Social Security number or complete Social Security number in older records
