Visclosky non-committal on health care bill vote
January 13, 2010
BY MICHELLE L. QUINN, POST-TRIBUNE CORRESPONDENTHAMMOND -- U.S. Rep. Peter J. Visclosky may not know how he'll vote when the Health Care Bill comes before the House of Representatives, but he's adamant in what he wants to see in it.
Visclosky told a room of 50 people at The Calumet Center at Purdue University Calumet during his first town hall meeting of the day that he definitely wants the public option put into the health care bill and that he does not want to see policies taxed. But either one of those items may not be a deal breaker for the congressman.
"I cannot tell you how I will vote on the final health care proposal until I see it," he said. "I do favor the public option if it solves the problem (of people not having health care)."
The country is in "grudgingly" better shape than it was a year ago and Visclosky pointed out that former President George W. Bush wasn't responsible for all the fiscal problems the country has endured. The middle class will also enjoy another jolt of tax relief for 2010, with single filers eligible for $400 and married couples $800, he said.
He is dismayed, however, that the pullout of the war in Iraq has not been more aggressive.
