The Indiana Democratic Party shares in the mourning of Lettie Oliver, who passed away this morning at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis.
Lettie, in addition to being a devoted wife and mother, was an impassioned Democrat and courageous woman. Many regarded her as a champion of organized labor and the rights of working Hoosiers. She was currently serving as the President of the Central Indiana Central Labor Council and Associate Director for AFSCME Council 62.
Over the course of her career, Lettie was a strong advocate for women's causes educating the women of AFSCME concerning politics and organizing. She also served on the steering committee of the Indiana Chapter of Women Work!, an organization dedicated to gaining equitable economic opportunities for women. In 2007, the Indiana Commission on Women granted Lettie with its Torchbearer Award.
Lettie also served the Marion County Democratic Party as a precinct committeeperson and ward leader in Warren Township. There isn't a Democrat who has been elected in Marion County or the State of Indiana who didn't receive assistance from Lettie Oliver.
Ms. Lettie Oliver's enthusiasm and lifetime commitment to working people and the Democratic Party will be sorely missed by all.

It's hard to believe someone so strong could be cut down when she is needed the most, but that appears to be what happened to AFL-CIO Central Labor Council President Lettie Oliver.
As my friend Zach Adamson put it on his Facebook page, "Though short in stature, she was a giant for Justice for all people. Our sister Lettie has been called home. Eternal rest grant unto her,O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her. May she rest in peace."
From Congressman Andre Carson's page, "Lettie Oliver was a great Democrat and great union activist, but she was an even greater person. I will miss you my sister."
From conservative blogger Abdul-Hakim Shabazz's page, "Mournig (sic) the loss of local Democratic labor leader Lettie Oliver. We argued all time over unions, outsourcing, privatization and free trade. She never backed down and God love her for it. She will be missed."
