Build a Better Marsh - public hearing

It's been a while since we hosted a Workers' Rights Board Hearing...but UFCW Local 700 was contacted by Marsh employees and the organizing has begun! We will host a Worker's Rights Board (WRB) hearing for the Marsh workers tomorrow, Tuesday, April 13th at 6:00 p.m.

As Indiana tries to dig out of one of the worst recessions in American history, a group of out-of-state bankers who bought Marsh Supermarkets, a company with deep Hoosier roots, has cut jobs, reduced hours and closed stores. Why? So they can maximize their personal profits and, as news reports indicate, put the company back on the auction block.

The WRB Panel will take testimony from current and past workers who are concerned about their working conditions and the potential sale of Marsh, AGAIN! Come hear their stories, and what you can do to help!

1. Marsh in North Eastern Indiana

can't be economically healthy. Their Fort Wayne store(s)? closed soon after opening and their store in Warsaw is the weakest food store in the town. Other towns with Marsh stores in this area have been hammered by the loss of manufacturing jobs. Several other "Marsh" stores in this area used to operate under the "Low Bill" name and they are much smaller stores than other Marsh Supermarkets.

I like marsh and shop at their Warsaw store but would not be at all surprised to see it closed.

2. I like Marsh.

But I really wonder how they manage to stay in business. The one in Fishers is directly across the street from Kroger.

A few weeks ago I stopped in to get a few things and I swear, I only saw one other customer in the entire store. When I went to check out, none of the lanes had checkers and I had to go in search of someone in order to pay for my stuff. The store is clean and well laid out -- but it boggles my mind how it manages to turn any kind of profit. Don't know if this is still the case, but when I was here in the early to mid-90s I had to go to both Marsh and Kroger because if one didn't carry a pasrticular brand, or carry it in a specific amount, the other did.

I'm going to try to throw more business Marsh's way. Kroger will be here until the Second Coming; we really do need to support locally based businesses.
