The unemployment figures are misleading. The number of Hoosiers that are underemployed, need more than one job just to stay above water, or no longer looking for employment out of despair is over 20%.
Indiana jobless rate rises to 9.9 percentIndiana’s jobless rate rose in March, just barely staying below double digits experienced by its Midwest neighbors.
The seasonally adjusted rate increased by 0.1 percent, to 9.9 percent. The state rate was higher than the national rate of 9.7 percent in March.
Indiana in March continued to have a lower rate than surrounding states: Michigan, 14.1 percent; Illinois, 11.5 percent; Ohio, 11 percent; and Kentucky, 10.7 percent.
Indiana’s rate rise came despite the addition of 16,600 jobs, the most in a single month since September 2005, the state reported today in a news release.
About 10 percent of all jobs added in the U.S. last month were in Indiana, said Teresa Voors, commissioner of the state Department of Workforce Development, in the release.
The added jobs in March represented the third straight month of employment gains, the state said.
The state also reported it was the only one among its neighbors to report a year-to-year decline in its unemployment rate .
