2010: What's at stake for Indiana Democrats?
Edited on Sat May-22-10 04:48 PM by PolyD
I went to a county Democratic party meeting, and we discussed some things that Democrats who are not news hounds, or political junkies might need to know. From that discussion I created this post on my personal blog. I talk to a lot of school bus drivers, and other working class folks, so that is the audience I am trying to reach.

1. What may get interesting and confusing is the vacancy in the 3rd Congressional District.
It isn't that vacancy that has to be dealt with and quite possibly why Daniels hasn't announced the date for the special election. There are different scenarios that could result in other vacancies especially in the State House that would leave them vulnerable and a good possibility of preventing them taking the House.

2. Good to know
although I don't think I would be telling non engaged Democratic voters that. Democrats need to develop good habits of voting in every election cycle, whether they think it's important to them, or whether they think there are good candidates or not. There are a lot of first time voters out there that rode in on the 2008 Obama wave of euphoria that we all will have to bring back into the voting booth. They don't need any reasons to NOT show up.

Just my opinion, but I would like to know more in more detail your thoughts on the upcoming cycle if you have the time and inclination to share. :)

3. Well I didn't want to get into too much detail in case the oppo were lurking.
I didn't think I had posted anything that would suggest our voters not to vote. If anything, now is the time to take advantage of every vote while they are in disarray.

We don't even know if the special election will be held separate from the general or at the same time.

4. Daniels will probably make it coincide with the Nov. election.
In the first place, it's the politically savvy thing to do. And in the second place, it's cheaper, and Daniels is nothing if not cheap.

5. Gee Sylvia doesn't mention that an election was held 3 months later
when Julia Carson died in the 7th District under Daniels watch. Or when Jill Long was elected in a special election nearly 3 months after Dan Quayle was sworn in as VP.

From news accounts the Carson special election cost Indy nearly 1 million. And projected cost of this one looks to come under $600k. Recently the state legislature with Daniels' blessing pass legislation allowing for special referendums. Not exactly a cost saving measure. Special elections don't happen that often and should in my opinion be held as soon as possible.

There are also two different ways of looking at the loss of representation due to Souder's selfishness. 1) We haven't had representation in nearly 16 years. So a few more months won't make a difference. 2) We shouldn't lose representation because of Souder's stupidity and Daniels' claim of saving money.
