The Passing of Lettie Oliver
By Special to Recorder
Published: Monday, March 1, 2010 2:14 PM ESTThe Indiana Democratic Party shares in the mourning of Lettie Oliver, who passed away this morning at Community East Hospital in Indianapolis.
Lettie, in addition to being a devoted wife and mother, was an impassioned Democrat and courageous woman. Many regarded her as a champion of organized labor and the rights of working Hoosiers. She was currently serving as the President of the Central Indiana Central Labor Council and Associate Director for AFSCME Council 62.
Over the course of her career, Lettie was a strong advocate for women’s causes educating the women of AFSCME concerning politics and organizing. She also served on the steering committee of the Indiana Chapter of Women Work!, an organization dedicated to gaining equitable economic opportunities for women. In 2007, the Indiana Commission on Women granted Lettie with its Torchbearer Award.
Lettie also served the Marion County Democratic Party as a precinct committeeperson and ward leader in Warren Township. There isn’t a Democrat who has been elected in Marion County or the State of Indiana who didn’t receive assistance from Lettie Oliver.
Ms. Lettie Oliver’s enthusiasm and lifetime commitment to working people and the Democratic Party will be sorely missed by all.
