Father, brother of IU tight end in Alaska plane crash

Updated: Aug 10, 2010 9:59 PM EDT

Bloomington - The father and brother of an Indiana University football player were involved in a fatal plane crash in Alaska Monday.

Bill Phillips Sr., the father of freshman tight end Paul Phillips, was killed in the crash in the Alaskan wilderness. Another son, Willy, was also on board the plane, but is listed as one of the survivors.

Head football coach Bill Lynch told the team of the news Tuesday evening. The university says Paul Phillips has left campus to be with his family.

"The thoughts and prayers of the entire Indiana University community are with Paul, his family and everyone touched by this tragedy," Lynch said.

Paul Phillips, who is from Darnestown, Maryland, came to IU after playing three years at Georgetown Prep, where he was a first team all-state selection his senior year. He has two other brothers who are currently playing college football. Andrew Phillips is a senior offensive guard at Stanford University, while Colter Phillips is a sophomore tight end at the University of Virginia.
