Encephalitis found in Elkhart mosquitoesElkhart - State Department of Health officials warn that Eastern Equine Encephalitis has been detected in mosquitoes in northern Indiana.
They say the disease has been identified in mosquitoes in Elkhart County.
Veterinary epidemiologist Jennifer House said Thursday the disease can cause lifetime neurological disabilities.
Most people infected won't have symptoms. The disease can cause high fever, headaches, vomiting, eye pain when exposed to light, weakness, confusion and seizures.
The disease is caused by a virus that is usually transmitted between birds and mosquitoes.
House recommends people avoid being outdoors from dusk to dawn, apply repellent and make sure windows and doors have screens in good repair.
