Versailles Marine killed in Afghanistan

Versailles - A Marine from Versailles has lost his life in Afghanistan. John Bishop, 25, was one of two killed in a convoy ambush this week. Nine others were injured.

The family was notified Wednesday. His father Gene Bishop has passed away, but his mother, Sarah Thomas, lives in Columbus, IN. Two Marines came to her house Wednesday to inform her of the accident.

Bishop leaves behind a wife, who is in the Marines and stationed in North Carolina, a four-year-old son and a baby on the way.

John attended South Ripley High School as a junior in 2001, but after graduating from Southwest Shelby High School joined the Marines. He spent a lot of time in this area as much of his family is here.

His half-brother, Mike Bishop, told WRBI this was his third tour of duty, and he was not looking forward to it.
