Obama to visit Kokomo next week

Kokomo — President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are coming to Kokomo Tuesday, according to multiple reliable sources.

Plans include the president and vice president landing at Grissom Air Reserve Base in Bunker Hill. The official reason for the visit and an itinerary have not yet been announced.

WNDU-TV in South Bend first reported the visit just after 11 a.m. Thursday. Sources said Secret Service personnel were in Kokomo Wednesday doing advance scouting for the visit.

The White House says both the President and Vice President Joe Biden will be in Kokomo on Tuesday as part of their “White House to Main Street” tour.

Kokomo was selected because the Recovery Act and the Administration’s auto restructuring plan have helped the city rebound from plant closings and layoffs. Unemployment has dropped by nearly eight percentage points since mid-2009 and a new hybrid vehicle component manufacturing plant has opened with the help of an $89 million Recovery Act grant.

President Obama’s last visit to Kokomo was in April 2008.
