INDIANAPOLIS | Braving frigid temperatures and gusty winds, thousands of Indiana union workers filled the Statehouse grounds Thursday to rally against a Republican agenda they say will reduce wages and benefits for Hoosiers.
"We're here to preserve the American dream and hold these politicians responsible. They're trying to pull the carpet out from under these hardworking American citizens," said Mike Evans, a member of Painters and Allied Trades Union, Glazers Local 1165, Merrillville.
Union workers wearing colorful shirts packed the west side of the Statehouse with the crowd stretching more than a block to the north, west and south. Organizers of the "We Are Indiana" rally estimated the crowd's size at more than 20,000 people, while Indiana State Police pegged attendance at 8,000.
Either figure would make the rally among the largest Statehouse protests and coupled with the daily rallies that have continued for the past three weeks inside the Statehouse, it shows union labor will not be ignored, said Nancy Guyott, president of the Indiana AFL-CIO.
"It was our hands, our tears, our toil that built this state, and we're not going to stand idly by while out-of-state special interests try to take it away from us," Guyott said. "By God, we are going to fight for our state."
Jim O'Rourke, of Hanna, and Eric Snell, of Gary, members of Teamsters Local 142 in Gary, held a large sign reading, "Hey GOP, we're awake now. We will never forget. See you at the ballot box."
The source of the controversy are a dozen measures pending in the Republican-controlled General Assembly that among other things would limit collective-bargaining rights for teachers and permanently prohibit collective-bargaining for state employees.
The legislation also would restrict the use of project labor agreements on public works projects and prevent local governments from setting a minimum wage higher than the state minimum.
