WASHINGTON -- Former U.S. Rep. Tim Roemer of Indiana said Tuesday that he is being encouraged by Democrats to run for the chairmanship of the national Democratic Party and is considering doing so.
"I have made no formal decision to seek the post," Roemer said in a statement. "I am, however, consulting with my family, friends and Democrats around the country to assess this potential opportunity, and expect to make a decision very soon."
The 447 members of the Democratic National Committee will pick a leader in February.
Eight prospective candidates -- including former presidential candidate Howard Dean -- spoke at a Democratic gathering in Florida during the weekend about the direction the party needs to take after its losses at the polls in November.
