DES MOINES (AP) — An Iowan who was a guest of first lady Laura Bush during the State of the Union Address and was touted as a single mom who backs drastic revisions of Social Security is a paid lobbyist for a prominent Republican-leaning interest group, legislative records show.
Sandra Jaques, of West Des Moines, was one of Mrs. Bush's guests at the State of the Union speech Wednesday night, and GOP officials were touting the 27-year-old as an example of young people favoring Bush's plan to revamp Social Security.
Jaques also has served as director of the Iowa arm of a group called FreedomWorks, a group that recruits conservative political activists and is led by former Republican Reps. Dick Armey and Jack Kemp.
