Governor returns favor by drumming up support for PAC

Last year, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa endorsed Chet Culver in the Democratic gubernatorial primary and then in the general election. Now, the organization is getting a great big thank-you.

Culver’s supporters last week received a letter from him — it wasn’t on state stationery, but it said GOVERNOR CHET CULVER in big, bold letters across the top of the page. The letter asked his “dear friends” to “give $100, $50, $25 or whatever you can afford” to the Freedom Fund PAC, the political-action arm of Planned Parenthood. The letter included a pledge card.

Skinny hears that Jim Larew, the governor’s general counsel, is taking on the added duties of policy director, with the governor shipping out current policy director Bob Mulqueen to become liaison for the new Power Fund. Larew, an Iowa City lawyer and longtime friend of John Culver as well as Chet Culver, has long had the governor’s ear. Now he has both of them. …
