AMES, IOWA 2005-05-24 Iowa Republican Senator Charles Grassley is dishing out some harsh rhetoric against his own Republican colleagues in the U.S. Senate after a compromise over votes for judicial nominees. A group of 14 Democrats and Republicans hashed out a deal to squelch a filibuster. Democrats agreed to allow a vote on three controversial nominees, and to block others only under extraordinary circumstances. Republicans in turn backed off their threat to take the right of filibuster away. Senator Grassley believes his fellow-Republicans who engineered the deal took away his right to vote on all nominees. I wouldn't hire any of these guys to negotiate for me, Grassley said. The deal was announced as Senators were digging in for a possible all-night debate. Iowa's Democratic Senator Tom Harkin said he was pleased with the compromise. Senator Harkin had announced earlier in the day his office would stay open around the clock if the filibuster continued."

He never used to be like this, he used to think of Iowans first. He was just re-elected for another term, but maybe he needs to be recalled???

Not so much anymore. Never did anything outstanding, just muddled by, and now he's turned into just another kookaburra.

3. I never thought he was "Iowans first"

He is the biggest hypocrite in Iowa, and always has been. He voted against cloture (against ending filibuster debate) on five of Clinton nominees, and now he wails about how unfair filibusters are. Give me a break!

As Finance Committee Chair, he has been screwing Iowa's middle class, all the while smiling from his lawn mowers (uses 3 at a time), driving around the state in his big-old car, and giving us the grandpa, "aw shucks" routine.

It's amazing how gullible Iowans are, and how tough it is to get rid of incumbents in this state. My only hope is that Grassley's popularity sinks enough in the next few years that he will decide to retire from the Senate.

Please quit while you're on top, Chuck!

8. He didn't even have to campaign...

Art Small ran the worst major-party Senate campaign in the entire history of campaigning for the US Senate. Grassley didn't have to worry at all.

Hell Grassley was up in South Dakota most of the time campaigning for Military-Base-Boy John Thune.

9. Don't blame Art for that

It was the Democratic Party who failed to support a serious campaign against Grassley. I can't say I blame the party, because Grassley was a sure winner, unless maybe Vilsack ran against him.

Art Small did us a real favor by running against Grassley with almost no money. At least Grassley had to pay for TV ads, money which would have gone elsewhere. Art deserves our thanks, and respect.

Like it or not, Grassley is really popular in the state. We need to make sure that Iowans know what a phoney "Aw Shucks" Grassley is, and we need to continually work on bringing down his popularity. I think the Social Security issue is starting to wisen Iowans up.

Let's hope that in 4 years Grassley will decide that his popularity is waning and that he will decide not to run again.

10. I laughed my ass off every time I saw that ad!

I had just moved back from New Mexico and I was like "So this is how Iowans are running campaigns around here now, huh? Lawn mowers? 3 @ a time? Woo hoo!" I tell ya, WTF indeed!

5. I agree he's bush's bitch and proud of it.

I know not why. I wish someone would do some research to see of he could really be recalled. I'd think that $150,000,000 monstrosity that's supposed to be built in Coralville would be a fine example of malfeaseance in office.
Many of us used to think he was a true conservative. Bush is just using him for the Social Security bill and then will throw him out like an old shoe.
Is recall a real possibility?

6. When the man continues to get re-elected with 60--70-% margins

we aren't going to see a recall and will be laughed at for trying. The best we can do is ignore him, laugh at him and support Tom Harkin. Giving Grassley attention just gives what he supports and promotes attention. Treat him like a skunk at a summer picnic and maybe he'll just go away.

7. Can't Do it

1) No recall in Iowa
2) Federal Offices: Senators and Representatives may be included under some state recalls but it is questionable if such a process is constitutional. US Con specifies terms of election. Doubtful states can legislate restrictions on this.

Replace him in 2010 when he retires (I hope).

...with a more than adequate dose of Liquid Concentrate Viagra! At least it might give the guy a personality to enhance his famously inane ineptitude! But then again, Repunklicans and their Krischan friends may get too titillated from the spectacle of a Repukelican Senator mounted on three riding lawn mowers with an artificial boner in his pocket!
