The Polk County Board of Supervisors elects a new chair next month, but it’s unclear who it will be. Incumbent Tom Hockensmith would like a second two-year term, insiders tell Skinny, but that doesn’t sit well with the other two Democrats, Angela Connolly and John Mauro. Connolly wants the job, but she and Hockensmith always seem to be feuding about one thing or another, so it’s not likely Hockensmith will provide his needed vote. None of the Democrats is likely to back either of the two Republican supervisors — E. J. Giovannetti or Bob Brownell — so the job might fall to former chair Mauro. Mauro isn’t seeking the job, but he’d take it to keep it in Democratic hands, Skinny is told. Stay tuned. ...
… Chet Culver update: Skinny reported a while back that the governor left the important Jefferson-Jackson Dinner early — very early — apparently because there was a sports event he wanted to see. That was too good a rumor to check out, Skinny said, but now two sources have come forward to say it was true. Culver left so he could get to Green Bay in time for the next day’s Packers game, these two tell Skinny. Which bodes well for Brett Favre should he ever run for president. … Meantime, Culver canceled at the last minute a meeting with a score or so of presidents from Iowa’s private colleges and universities, with an aide saying the governor’s wife was out of town and his daughter was home sick. That was understandable, one of the meeting-goers told Skinny, until later that day when a college president who hung around saw the Culver daughter racing around the Capitol while her father held a ceremony pardoning a turkey. … Speaking of that, a wag suggests the governor pardoned the turkey after he heard the bird was cooperating with U.S. Attorney Matt Whitaker, who is going after all those Democrats.
Culver’s approval rate has remained virtually unchanged in his first year in office, according to statewide polls taken by Survey USA for KAAL-TV in the Mason City-Rochester-Austin market but not reported in Des Moines. Culver beat Congressman Jim Nussle a year ago with 54 percent of the vote, and the monthly surveys since then show him ranging between 50 percent — his first month in office — and 59 percent in August. The latest poll, taken a couple of weeks ago, has him at 58 percent, with 34 percent disapproving of his performance. The margin of error of 4 points makes up for much of the swings, and much of the rest comes from swings among independent voters.
The latest Survey USA poll shows Chuck Grassley with an amazing 72 percent approval rating — including approval from 71 percent of Democrats. Tom Harkin, who is up for re-election in November, has a 58 percent approval, with only 27 percent of Republicans signing on. But Skinny’s political consultants say that’s a good number for Harkin, who so far faces only token opposition….
