comservative talk radio marathon in DM Dec. 27 & 28
Twenty-two radio talk show hosts from across the United States are scheduled to take part in a broadcast marathon in Des Moines next week on the hot campaign topic of illegal immigration.

Critics would like to scuttle the event, which is booked for the Des Moines Marriott Hotel on Dec. 27 and 28. They claim the sponsoring organization, the Federation for American Immigration Reform, known as FAIR, is trying to create a climate of hatred in the nation.

"We don't agree with their views that are demonizing immigrants, and we don't appreciate their coming to Iowa telling us what we should think about immigrants," said Alicia Claypool, chairwoman of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission.

Dan Stein, president of FAIR, said it is his group that is being demonized. "They're trying to discredit an entire side of the debate," Stein said.

The Marriott Hotel was contacted by critics of the radio event about the possibility of canceling the event, but that appears unlikely, said Connie Ryan Terrell, executive director of the Interfaith Alliance of Iowa and Action Fund. Marriott officials could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

1. I feel sorry for any waiters and waitresses at nearby restaurants
cause the tips will probably be rather skimpy from this crowd.

2. tis true
I have told this story here before. We went to a Rev. Huckee appearance early on. It was at a small restaurant around lunch time. The Huck campaign had the restaurant serve a soup and sandwich. There were about 25 people. After the crowd left we stayed back and chatted with the waitress. She commented that I was the only one who had left a tip. My response was that I was probably the only Democrat in the room and had an appreciation for her work as my daughters had both done waitress work at one time.
Huckee probably left a tip, i don't know, but among the well-suited businessmen that were there, ther was not an extra nickel.

3. I bet Van Harden (WHO) is just salivating over this.
If anyone's ridden conservative talk-radio to fame and fortune around here it's Vanny. As for all the suits not leaving a tip I'm sure they'll gladly give a tip in the form of tax breaks or economic incentives to the corporation that employs those waitresses. That's how trickle-on economics works nowadays.
