The new math: In case you missed it, here are some figures from another economic development program. In 2004, Wells Dairy was thinking about moving its headquarters out of state. So the state gave the Le Mars company a forgivable loan of $2.9 million if it would build a $25 million headquarters in Le Mars, retain its 346 jobs and add 129 new ones, for a total of 475. The company built the headquarters, but today it employs just 317 people. In other words, it didn’t add any jobs and in fact cut 29 positions. So it has returned $1.25 million of the $2.9 million. Looked at another way, it got $1.65 million for cutting 29 jobs. “Wells’ Dairy’s request for state assistance was made in good faith,” Mike Wells, the company’s chief executive said. Of course. Skinny, in good faith, is willing to reduce its own staff by 10 percent or so if the state will pony up a million or two.
