Where did all those shiny blue McCain-Palin signs come from all a sudden? A stroll around the metro shows that McCain still feels he has a chance here in Iowa, despite the polling trends. The signs arrived last week at McCain’s regional offices, leaving Skinny wondering, “Why so late?” Headquarters apparently just received the “thumbs up” from the Republican National Convention, and it “took time to hire staff to get the ball rolling.” No hurry. …

Back to politics. One may have thought that having a female moderate the Palin-Biden vice-presidential debate would have been a good thing for Sarah Palin. One may have also thought that having a black person moderate the debate would have been good for Joe Biden. Gwen Ilfill fit both descriptions but was heavily criticized by right wingers for being selected as the moderator of last week’s debate, as she is rumored to have a favorable book about Barack Obama to publish on Jan. 20, 2009, a date that coincides with the presidential inauguration. “She should have been required to turn to the cameras and tell the national audience that she has a pro-Obama book coming out,” says an angry Republican. Skinny notes that Ilfill has been senior correspondent for PBS’s The NewsHour and moderator of Washington Week on the public broadcast channel. Before that, she covered politics and public policy for the New York Times, Washington Post and Baltimore Evening Sun. But who’s counting? Skinny is just glad that Carolyn Washburn wasn’t chosen instead.
