Council passes traditional-marriage resolution

HOW SHAMEFUL - feel free to leave comments on the story.

Voting 3-2, the council Monday adopted a resolution supporting the legal definition of marriage as between one man and one woman, opposing efforts to redefine the institution as anything else and urging the Legislature to place a constitutional amendment on the ballot.

The vote came after a public hearing that lasted two hours and 20 minutes and saw more than 85 people pack the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Hoffman first proposed the resolution in December, but Ferris, Hobart and Rixner succeeded in deferring the matter while an attorney general's opinion was sought on the council's authority to take such action. Last week, Ferris said he didn't want to wait for an opinion that might not even be forthcoming.

Explaining his rationale Monday, Ferris, a Roman Catholic, said: "I have an obligation to my faith. ... My faith is more important than being politically correct. When I die, I have to answer to someone who is more important to me than an editorial writer or a blogger. ... We know we are being aggressively lobbied to change the definition of marriage."

1. Why did I leave the Catholic church? Oh yeah
Why is a person holding a position of power in a secular government who says "When I die, I have to answer to someone who is more important."
May I congratulate the 2 council member who seem to realize that who someone loves is none of their fucking business.

Snip

ROME (AFP) — Attacks on Pope Benedict XVI's decision to lift the excommunication of a Holocaust denier escalated Monday, with one theologian calling on him to step down as the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

Criticism following the pope's January 24 announcement has been particularly cutting in Germany, where denying the Holocaust is a crime punishable with a jail sentence.

End snip

Could be more than one answer required at heavens gate

3. Just when I thought maybe we were making some progress on this side of the state.
Although, I suppose I kind of expected this would return. But it doesn't make it any less infuriating.

I'm sure Steve King will issue some statement of support for the council's brave stance. :grr:

5. Good for the two that voted against it.
I'm sure they will be targets for all the hate-mongers.
