Underscoring the stakes in one of the nation's hottest congressional races, rivals in eastern Iowa's 1st District have raised nearly $700,000 with the primary still nearly a year away.

On the Democratic side, Waterloo lawyer Bruce Braley has raised more than $211,000 and still has $190,000 cash in the bank, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

Rick Dickinson, a former state legislator who now heads the Greater Dubuque Development Corporation, said he has raised $184,000 since joining the race, including $166,700 over the last 90 days.

With only a couple of dozen congressional races around the country likely to be competitive, both parties will pour money into those contests. That means the June 6 primary winners will have little trouble raising the money needed to compete in what could be the most expensive congressional race in the state's history.
