U.S. Rep. Steve King said Friday that how Iowa Gov. Chet Culver handles the gay marriage decision will be a huge issue in Iowa’s next governor’s election and could make it more likely King will challenge Culver.
King, a Republican, decried the Iowa Supreme Court ruling and called on Culver, a Democrat, and the Iowa Legislature to immediately pass a law that would limit marriage in Iowa to couples who live there. That would at least stop couples from outside Iowa from taking advantage of the high court ruling.
“If Gov. Culver does not step up and be very definitive on this and take action before the end of this general assembly, this will be a big issue when he runs in 2010,” King said.
When prompted by a question, King said if the issue isn’t properly handled, “it does make it more likely I will run.”
King has previously said he is considering a bid for governor in 2010.
