Item #1: Some broad-minded Republicans (if that isn’t an oxymoron these days) are whispering that Mary Vermeer Andringa, the chief executive of Pella’s Vermeer Corp., would be a great candidate to run against Chet Culver in the gubernatorial election next year. Andringa is well-regarded in Iowa business circles and recently became the first woman elected as vice chair of the National Association of Manufacturers. To run against Culver, of course, Andringa would have to beat all those far-right guys expected to seek the Republican nomination: Bob Vander Plaats, who already has announced; Steve King, who is leaning toward running; Christopher Rants, who would like to run; and a churchful of others. One GOP operative told Skinny the plan is to divide and conquer — to encourage all the far-right guys to run so Andringa could slip in as the moderate winner, sort of the way Bob Ray did in 1969.
