I'm doing a (religious) wedding for a couple on May 23rd, here in Illinois. After worship today, they asked me if I would drive to Davenport the day before, do a brief service there, and sign a license, making them legally married. Because I lived in Iowa when I used to do weddings there, this was never an issue...is there a clergy residency requirement? Some states require that those signing wedding licenses live in the state. A friend of mine found out that this was the case in Wisconsin last year. He did his niece's wedding in Lake Geneva, but had to have a local pastor do a portion of the service, and sign the license.

So, can I drive across the river, do a wedding, and sign a license? Or do my parishioners need a judge or local pastor to do that?

I am SOOOO excited at doing the first wedding of two women where I can actually sign a license!!! I tear up thinking about it. Thank you, Iowa!!!!

1. My son-in-law did

He lives in Illinois. He married my other daughter and her boyfriend here in Iowa. I think he simply cleared it with the county a week or so before. Not sure of the details.

2. I talked to a friend who's an attorney in Clarion. He says

any clergyperson can do it, as long as I have standing with my denomination. I do. So, it looks like I'm good. Still gonna call a clerk, but between your info and my friend's, it looks doable, maybe even easy.
