http://www.dmcityview.com/skinny.shtmlWell, “Trudy and the girls are on board,” so Christopher Rants is running for governor. What a surprise. Next earthshaking thing we’ll hear is that Chet Culver is running for re-election. Rants, the 42-year-old Sioux City Republican who was majority leader of the Iowa House until (a) the Republicans lost control and (b) his colleagues voted him out of leadership, sent an e-mail to those GOP legislative colleagues the other day saying “I’m not making any official announcements or anything like that just yet” — and then making what can only be seen as an unofficial announcement. He said he has driven 2,300 miles in the past couple of weeks, “talking to donors and activists about running for governor.”
The e-mail shows he hasn’t changed. “In it, HE says ‘I,’ ‘me,’ or ‘my’ no less than 40 times,” says a guy who forwarded the e-mail to Skinny. “The body of the entire message was only 442 words. It leaves little question about who a Rants for Governor campaign is really about — Christopher and HIS ego.” (Unlike the understated and altruistic Culver, presumably.)
Two things of note: Rants estimates, realistically, it will take “at least” $8 million to $10 million to win the nomination and run against Culver. And the non-announcement is a pretty good indication that, win or lose the nomination, he won’t seek re-election next year to the Legislature, where he’s been a fixture since 1992. (“I think they” — Trudy and the girls — “view this as either way we are all home together be it at Terrace Hill or Sioux City.”)

This might be a primary season we can actually enjoy.
