2 extremely anti-choice LTEs in the CR Gazette published today:
1.) In his address to the 2009 graduating class of the University of Notre Dame, President Barack Obama noted that a problem in our society is that “too many view life through a lens of immediate self-interest.” If we view the abortion issue to determine which side is self-serving, we find that women who seek abortions do not seek the best interest of their child, abortion providers receive huge financial benefit for providing abortions and people who want to restrict abortion are seeking what is best for the unborn. Another comment Obama made was that since we will not be able to agree on abortion, we should all agree to “work to reduce the number of women who seek out abortions.” While it is true that we should reduce the demand for abortion, this approach in isolation is like saying we should have reduced the demand for slaves, child labor and segregated schools to end assaults on civil liberties. Civil liberties are not achieved when laws exist to enable the devaluation of a class. Legislation is the ultimate demand reducer for abortion. If the president’s goals for our society include being selfless and reducing the demand for abortions, he should support pro-life legislation and judges. -Robbin Rekemeyer Cedar Rapids
2.) The thought process of liberals is confusing. On one hand, they are brave enough to condone the killing of more than 30 million babies in the United States since 1974. On the other hand, they get queasy about waterboarding three known terrorists. They want the release of photos of possibly inhumane treatment of a few prisoners but think we shouldn’t see pictures of aborted babies because it might shock our conscience. Go figure. -Rob Gettemy Marion
