Saw this article about Grassley and Harkin today in the TH

I just saw this article about Grassley and Harkin in today's Telegraph Herald.

Especially this part about the so called Iowa Christian Alliance;

Steve Scheffler, head of the Iowa Christian Alliance, said his group is closely watching Grassley because he's the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee and is deeply involved in bargaining over the shape of a health care reform effort.

Scheffler's group is pressuring Grassley to oppose any sort of public option as part of the final measure.

"He has said he's opposed to that and I take him at his word," said Scheffler. Still, he said, activists are organizing to drive home the point.

How Christian is that to oppose public health care? From where I sit, not very goddamn much. I wish these people would try cracking open the bible and reading it instead of thumping it all the time!

1. I was raised by Christians

and associated with people who were and are church going people all through my youth. These people actually walk the walk as well as talking the talk. My parents are liberal Democrats even now at their advanced ages. So I guess what I'm trying to say is that just because a person professes to be Christian, that doesn't mean that they are bad people. The true christians I know are truly compassionate people.

2. True, in my experience.

But the most Christ-like Christian I've ever known never set foot inside a church.

Parking one's butt on a pew for an hour a week proves squat, and those are the "Christians" who are loudest about it, is the problem.

The ones who really follow the teachings of Jesus don't waste time talking about it.

(I am a non-vocal agnostic, and some of the dearest people in my life have been Roman Catholics, who maybe didn't hit mass every Sunday but fed anyone who needed a meal.)

3. Same thing about patriotism

The people I consider to be the best of us more often than not don't feel a need to prove their patriotism. They're not the ones driving down the road with big ass flags on their vehicles that make it impossible for the drivers to see what's going on behind their vehicles. They're not the ones who have a bunch of ribbons plastered on their vehicles.
