NYTimes: "After Iowa Flood, Feeling a Bit Ignored"
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/28/us/28cedar.html?_r=1&hp

Any of you read this article, talking about the lack of media attention and slowness in receiving federal help? The author said s/he wasn't making comparisons to Katrina, but they're inevitable.

In the comments at the end, many were attributing the problems to reverse racism, of course. My theory is that in large part, Iowa hasn't gotten the attention from the mainstream media, because of the invisibility of flyover country. You know, how there can be a big storm in Iowa and the midwest, but it's not news until it hits the east coast? What do you all think?

1. Yeah, I think it's the flyonver thing. Also, I remember hearing Iowans being interviewed
and saying they didn't need fed help, they could take care of themselves. Mostly RWers, I'm sure, who were themselves making comparisons to the need for fed help in NO. I smelled racism in those comments.

Maybe the media took those people at their word, and thought Iowans could take care of themselves.

2. Thank you for posting.
I am glad the NY Times has taken an interest in what should be an outrage. I know it makes me sick when I drive down F avenue or anywhere in the flooded area. I see house after house sitting abandoned. I see businesses boarded up and in complete disarray. I talked to a friend the other day who is still living with her son because they still can't tell her and her husband if their house is to be rebuilt or torn down.

Why no national press???.....that's easy.....the story wouldn't sell ....no one gives a damn about these people. It's a reflection of the me first society we find ourselves in.

This administration and congress should feel nothing but shame for their lack of effort. While they are busy bailing out their bank buddies and expanding war efforts....people in this situation suffer for what I consider needless suffering.......I know they have no shame for the most part though.

Do I sound angry????.....you bet your ass I'm angry.
