Thomson, IL will house Gitmo detainees

Thomson is about 50 miles from my house and the Rock Island Arsenal and the Exelon nuclear power plant are nearby. And yet I'm not worried at all. Why? I have faith in the security of a maximum security prison. And I have faith in the U.S. army to make damn sure nothing happens at the arsenal.

Senator Chuck Grassley has repeatedly raised the prospect of terrorism suspects escaping if they are transferred from the Guantanamo Bay detention facility to prisons on the mainland. As many as 60 prisoners might be brought to the Thomson Correctional Center in Illinois, just across the Mississippi River from Clinton. Grassley's comments during a conference call with reporters on Wednesday approached self-parody:

"I oppose them even coming to the United States," the Iowa Republican said during a conference call with Iowa reporters. <...>

"I haven't heard from Iowans, but I would have to have my head in the sand if I didn't assume that Iowans would be somewhat fearful," Grassley said.

5. I can see Arsenal Island

if I walk about three blocks from my house. And as I stated, I am not afraid at all. I expect that the island will be safe and sound today, tomorrow, next week and next decade. And Grassley says he hasn't heard from Iowans yet? Well he'll hear from me. I'll tell him that the Thomson, IL/Clinton, IA area needs the jobs and that jobs are the major economic stimulus of all.

6. It's not all that far from where I live either

I think it's about 70 miles from my home. And I am not the least bit afraid either of the prison being brought to operational status. In fact I'm glad Thomson was chosen. Not only for all the jobs it brought to the area, but because it pisses the teabagger at work who lives near Thomson off.
