DES MOINES — Democratic U.S. Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana began a three-day visit to Iowa on Tuesday, indicating he is serious about laying the groundwork for a potential 2008 presidential run.

Both Bayh and Vilsack have sought to distinguish themselves nationally by touting their middle-of-the-road politics and electoral success in moderate-to-conservative states. Bayh just stepped down as chairman of the politically moderate Democratic Leadership Council, a post he handed off to Vilsack last month.
Bayh is in his second term in the Senate, which followed two terms as Indiana governor. His father is Birch Bayh, a former senator who ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1976, losing to Jimmy Carter.

Former Iowa Democratic Party chairman Gordon Fischer said Bayh is well-known to Democratic activists, but otherwise unknown in the state. "I think the moderate image will serve him well here. And being a Midwesterner doesn't hurt," he said.
He believes that if Vilsack runs, he would be the overwhelming favorite to win the Iowa caucuses, but there would be a vigorous race to come in second.
