http://kma960.com/localnews.asp(Red Oak) -- Members of a controversial Kansas church are coming to Red Oak to protest during a funeral.
Red Oak Police Chief Drue Powers tells KMA News members of the Westboro Baptist Church are coming to the community Saturday to protest during a celebration of life service for Milton Lantz Junior. Lantz was killed June 26th in a motorcycle-tractor collision during Red Oak's Junction Days at the intersection of North 2nd and East Corning Streets. However, Powers says the protest will not take place at the funeral home--nor during the service, itself.
Through negotiations, Powers says the church members agreed to protest in the Red Oak Square from 10:15-to-11 a.m.. Iowa law prohibits protests within 500 feet of a funeral service.
Seven protesters will be placed within a barricaded area on the southeast corner of the square. The protest also takes place during Red Oak's Crazy Days. Powers advises the public not to interact with the protesters, no matter what they're beliefs are. Powers adds the Constitution and the Supreme Court give the group the rights to picket and assemble.
"Stay away from the protectors," says Powers. "They will be on their way and gone after they're done."
