How would we get recall in Iowa
Could this be simply a law? Or would it need to be a constitutional amendment?
Anyone know? One of the good things about Wisconsin is that they can throw the bum out after a year and don't have to put up with his right wing incompetence for too long. That seems like a very good thing.

(for no reason :hi: Jeff)

1. Are you sure you want recall? Omaha Mayor Recall
From Nebraska DU page

The campaign manager for the losing candidate in the last election headed up this effort with unlimited financing for the GOP. Paid people were manning the petition stations. With the low threshold for recall it was a foregone conclusion the petition effort would be successful. Low voter turnout and deep GOP pockets probably means the Mayor will be recalled. That will set up two more elections for a new Mayor and cause more budget woes for Omaha. It is both unwarranted and stupid. We have elections every 4 years to gauge the record of Mayor. That would normally occur in 2 1/2 years. Oh, and this sets up an interim Mayor between the recall and the general election for a replacement. This is no way to run a City.

The entertainment tax was necessary to fund the new baseball stadium for the College World Series. The NCAA would have taken Omaha's premier event elsewhere without this upgrade in facilities. Frankly, I think it was well worth it.

In Omaha it seems small groups with money make a muddle of things. Removed Dem. mayor Mike Boyle in 87 and failed to remove Suttle this year

2. Seems to me to be worth exploring anyway
I know there are problems wit it, but there are problems with any system. Especially when some group takes it to the extreme.
But, without some check on elected officials from outside the circle of government I fear we will have more and more Walkers.
The check that is in place now - impeachment - is never used and I doubt it ever will be at a state level.
One of the problems with democracy in general is that all parties must implicitly agree to some base rules. Once one group chooses to break those implicit rules democracy starts going down the shitter.
Lee Atwater was the rule breaker and he had success - success brings all sorts of bad imitations.

So maybe recall is not the best solution but if you were in Wisconsin would you want to leave Walker in to do another 3.5 years of damage?

3. Remember California
Summer before 2000 election, brown-outs black-outs sky-high electric rates utilities go bankrupt. Chenney on TV every night dissing California not building more power plants. 2003 Gray Davis recalled (Darrell Issa spent millions) and Terminator is new Gov.. 2004 tapes reveal Enron traders screwed California, too late to save a Democrat.

I did see that poll about Branstad approval rating being under 50%.

But I feel like nobody is actually paying attention to the House and Branstad except us.

5. My partner at work is pretty much apolitical
but she is liberal. She agrees with us. I think there are lots of Iowans who see this for the union-busting it is, and support the protestors, even if they're not vocal. Lotsa Deere workers and retirees in W'loo. I'd like to sound out my brother, union member and worker on the line at Lennox in M'town.
