Several regents said they can’t recall a governor ever asking a board president to resign, though Branstad made efforts to shape the board’s leadership when he was governor in the 1990s.

Miles and Evans angered many Republicans in April by voting to name a public policy institute at Iowa State University after five-term U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, a Democrat.
