Occupy Iowa City (pics)
The place is buzzing with activity. Seems to have grown to about 20 or so tents. Activities are scheduled hourly. Donations of all kinds (sleeping bags, ground pads) are being accepted but donations of the $$ kind are important for the long slog ahead. It's easy to be upbeat when it's 80 and sunny but the 40's and rain are not far away. And of course, the Iowa winter. It's a fifteen minute walk from my house so I plan to frequent often. Keep you updated.

5. I question some of the necessities, rural.
They have addresses for bathrooms that are obviously in apartments. And only a couple. I mean if I have to drop a Palin at 3 in the morning I have to hoof it four or five blocks? Trying to find out if they have inquired about a port-o-let. I'm sure Kinnick can spare one.

I truly hope it's a short one because drunken football fans and the Occupiers will not mix. Game should be over around nine and if it's a loss there are some folks who take it very seriously. It could get ugly. But spirits are high with the news from NYC. I'll post their website tonight. Cheers!

23. Shouldn't be, rural. Very few incidents of harassment thus far...
...aside from the shouts of "get a job" and other brilliant lines. They have around the clock security detail. The Occupiers are planning on building a headquarters (about 200 2x4's were delivered yesterday) for the GA's and storage because the City wants the Gazebo freed up. A little confused to what was agreed on Wednesday night but OIC seems to be settling in for the long haul.

24. A little over two weeks in. (pics)
A couple of new additions to College Green. A huge sign welcomes you to the occupation. And a skeleton of a structure that is supposed to be a potential kitchen. But a 'cease building' injunction was slapped on it Friday by City Manager Tom Marcus. I don't know. You haven't signed the permit offered by the City but you decide to start building a kitchen? I can understand the part of not signing the offered permit but don't tempt the good faith of the City by building a structure without permission. Just my humble opinion.

28. OIC to stage protest at Iowa City city council meeting tonight at 7:00 PM
Edited on Tue Nov-01-11 11:16 AM by Condem
Seems the City Manager changed the language of the rules AFTER Occupy Iowa City signed in good faith. The original:

and the updated permit:

The 3 PRIMARY Changes:
No structures of any kind
Limit of 6 per tent
Renewal clause removed (the BIG one)

Isn't that cheating on the part of the city? Protest at City Hall

It seems that he used to live right here in the Quads for a year or so and some friends are trying to help him pay his medical bills. www.qctimes.com and click on local news link. Or simply call the Ascentra Credit Union, of which I am a proud member, at 563-355-0152.

45. First, and foremost, OIC has a permit that allows them to camp through the end of February...
...which I'm not 100% sure on this but I believe the only Occupy protest to have this. Eviction is a non-issue. OIC has a very good working relationship with the city. How many camps have a port-o-let? I've been there a bunch of times and the only police presence I have seen is when a couple of the homeless who are camping with OIC got into a bit of a fracas. The police were gone in five minutes. Aside from the usual "get a job" and "dirty hippies" catcalls, there has been very little incidents of trouble. Man. Even on Thanksgiving people were yelling that shit. Believe that? But it must be a nice feeling to hit your tent everynight and not have to worry that your head is going to be busted in like the big city camps have.
