University of Iowa 20th anniversary of the shootings
I saw this on KCRG this morning...

Reno is now the chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Iowa. On November 1, 1991, Reno was an associate professor in the department, working at Van Allen Hall. That afternoon, she was on the fifth floor.

Former student and doctoral graduate Gang Lu, 28, walked into the building that Friday afternoon, destined for the second floor. Upset that his dissertation did not win a prize, Lu met with faculty members and started shooting.

And this was the first comment left on the page;

If teachers or students would have been allowed to carry weapons, things might have turned out better. The Iowa coalition to prevent gun violence started because of this tragedy. That group went off the deep end and wanted nobody to own guns. We worked on their "display" guns to make them un-fireable. Minutes after he paid us, he went to the police saying his life was in danger because we had his address and we are a gun shop. He event went off on the police how they have no right to carry guns. The guy and group are nut cases that feed off this tragedy to mis-inform people about the dangers of weapons. KCRG refused, and still refuses, to air info countering any anti-gun article or group’s actions.

Sigh.

1. My mind continues to boggle at the tought of an armed student population
Yeah - well things may have turned out better, but there is also I think a much better chance that things could have been decidedly worse once bullets started flying.
