Ugh.
WEST UNION, Iowa (AP) — A 37-year-old Iowa State Patrol trooper is fighting news media efforts to have cameras in the courtroom for his February trial.
Mikel Yauk has pleaded not guilty to burglary and possession of a burglary tool. Prosecutors say Yauk got into the home of a friend last month, performed a sex act on her and took her cellphone.
The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says its editor, Nancy Newhoff, has asked the court to allow a television camera, a still camera and an audio recording device in the courtroom. The request is considered standard for cases with wide public interest.
Yauk's attorney, Heather Prendergast says the extra coverage would only increase the likelihood Yauk couldn't get a fair trial in Fayette County.
