However, he told a Linn County Democratic gathering Saturday night that at the same time they are fighting for control of legislatures, governors' offices and Congress, Democrats have to fight for the soul of their party.
The party's 2004 vice presidential nominee, said Democrats have to offer a true alternative to President Bush and congressional Republicans.
"I'm not interested in being part of an incremental Democratic party" that says "if George Bush has tax cuts, well, we have a slightly better tax cut," Edwards said in a 25-minute speech at the Linn County Democratic Party's Hall of Fame Dinner at Veterans Memorial Coliseum. "To hell with that. I don't believe in the same America George Bush believes in."

Democrats, he told about 150 Democrats who also heard from four gubernatorial hopefuls and other candidates for state and federal office, "have to be the activists ... have to be the change agents."
