DES MOINES — Gov. Tom Vilsack is calling on U.S. Rep. Jim Nussle to abandon the idea of funneling leftover campaign funds from his latest congressional race to help finance a run for governor of Iowa in 2006.
Nussle, a Republican from Manchester, has roughly $330,000 in unused campaign dollars from his successful re-election race against Bill Gluba, a Democrat from Davenport, this year.
Nussle’s political action committee, IowaPAC, had raised $110,000 by the end of November that also could be used for a gubernatorial race.
He has not officially announced that he will run for governor, but many political observers believe he would be a front-runner for the GOP nomination if he decided to seek the post. Vilsack, a Democrat, has said he will not seek a third term.
