TOPEKA – Kansas Catholics spoke out today, criticizing the Catholic Church for its support of the so-called marriage amendment on Tuesday's ballot.
"It is so un-Christlike to take this stand," said Father Phil Reed, who recently returned to Africa as a missionary. He has been corresponding with his sister Mary Ralstin of Shawnee about his beliefs.
The Knights of Columbus, to date, is the largest donor and the largest out-of-state donor to the campaign. The national organization recently gave $100,000 to the supporters of the amendment in Kansas. Bruce Ney, a Catholic and chair of Kansans for Fairness, was so disappointed in the Knight's campaign donation that he dropped his 15-year membership with the organization
To date, 118 members of the clergy have signed a letter opposing the amendment. The letter and the names of the signers are available online at www.kansansforfairness.org.
