The only county in the state that defeated the biogoted marriage amendment. You go, Lawrence, you go!!!

And BTW, why did any thinking person believe mann coulter would be well received in liberal Lawrence?? :)

1. Congrats
Congratulations Douglas County.

Its a sad state of affairs when 70% of the voting population of a state are bigots. Discrimination, no matter the perceived justification, is still discrimination.

Kansas made national news by being the 18th bigoted state. Another checkmark to add to the worlds poorly perceived view of this state. Why do we even have an office of tourism?

2. I'm not at all surprised. I often miss living in Lawrence.
Johnson County is not quite as exciting!

3. Thank you, Douglas County
from a Johnson Countian who feels betrayed by his own people. This is what happens when good people don't participate in a participatory democracy.

4. maybe they pulled the state average down
I was bummed to see somewhat Democratic Leavenworth county vote "yes" in a larger percentage than the state average.

7. Do you have Jefferson County's results?
I always wanted to see my vote count, and I'll bet that it shows up in the JeffCo tally!

Maybe something like:

YES: 3500
NO 1

8. Results for Jefferson -- Not pretty
http://www.kssos.org/ent/jefferson.html

YES 3249 75 % 414106 70 %
NO 1062 25 % 178018 30 %

At least you've got 1,061 others in Jefferson County (who cared enough to vote) who understood what was going on.

9. Stealth voters?
Here in Oskie, there were "vote yes" signs in several yards (with those annoying stick figures), and the local paper hit the issue hard (from the "yes" side, natch).

I didn't hear or see anything from the "no" side before the election.

I talked to some folks about the damage to civil liberties a "yes" vote would cause. Not sure if it helped, though. I don't think going back to my neighbors and asking if my argument swayed their vote would be kosher.

I took the day off from work to stay in town and vote. At least I got some yardwork done, so the day wasn't a complete waste.

6. Breakdown of voting in Lawrence by precinct
Edited on Wed Apr-06-05 03:33 PM by Mabus
While there is a lot to celebrate on the vote against the amendment in Lawrence (the rest of Douglas County isn't as liberal as I would hope). I was disheartened to hear that while students voted against the amendment in huge numbers they failed to help the PLC. Student areas voted heavily against the amendment but didn't cast many votes for city commission. We could have used their votes. We have a lot of work ahead of us to make sure they participate in local government too.

Here's a breakdown of the vote in Lawrence on the marriage amendment that was posted on larryville.com Fortunately I'm an eastsider and my precinct voted "NO" in overwhelming numbers. It makes me feel better about the neighborhood I live in.
:woohoo:

Text from larryville.com that accompanies the breakdown:

In case you were curious about how the amendment actually did in Lawrence itself (as opposed to Douglas County as a whole), it was opposed by 68% of Lawrence voters (13560) and favored by 32% (6347)

Within Lawrence, the amendment was rejected by majorities in every single precinct throught the entire city. It did best in Precinct 37 (Haskell Campus) garnering 48% of the vote. It did worst in Precinct 39 (New York School) where it garnered 8% of the vote.

In three other precincts the amendment was under 10% in support (7,8 and 9)

In case you are curious, given the Douglas County totals of 15,840 No and 9,388 Yes, that means that outside of Lawrence 2280 voted No (43%) and 3041 voted Yes (57%). So Lawrence is much more liberal the the rest of Douglas county, no surprise there.

11. 10th & Penn
is in either the 39th or 40th precinct. I'm not really sure where the precinct boundaries are. Although 11th street as a boundary makes sense. So if you were at 10 & Penn then you were prbably in the 39th precinct. We're in the 40th and we vote at the Judicial and Law Enforcement Center. Where did you vote?

FYI, looks like the 38th precinct is south of 23rd and east of Haskell, on the edge of town (nearer to St. Mary's Lake than New York school).

New York Elementary School (Yea Novas!) is between New York and New Jersey Streets (west and east) and 9th and 10th (north and south). It is one block east of 10th and Pennsylvania.

Which house at 10th & Pennsylvania? I'm in the 40th precinct and walk the dogs to Hobbs Park (10th and Delaware) every so often. When we go to Hobbs I usually go by 10th and Pennsylvania on the way to or from the park. Most of the time I have take them to South Park. It is closer to the house and they have their canine rivals that they need to posture at on a daily basis.

I know the people who currently live at 10th and Penn on the southeast and southwest corners. Small world, isn't it?
