Spitting on Republicans
A couple of weeks ago a resident of the KC metro area spit tobacco juice on Jane Fonda. The KC Star said about 2/3 of the letters it received, approved of the spitting. Now while I do think that Miss Fonda's actions in North Vietnam went beyond bad judgment, I did not approve of the spitting. My disapproval is largely due to the respect for the elderly (she is 67) that my parents brought me up with. But several RW acquaintances of mine said they approved of the spitting.

Doesn't the approval of spitting in this case now empower me to spit on people who's views I dislike? I mean, what's good for the goose, is good for the gander. Right? Should I be practicing my tobacco chewing so I can spit on Republicans? I know this could escalate and make a real mess, but I just thought I'd ask.

1. No,
just because other little jerks do something doesn't mean we can.

3. I used to chew tobacco
And I'm talking Red Man, Levi Garrette and Beechnut. In July I would chew "plug" tobacco though.

4. Spitting is unsanitary and rude.
But a swift kick in the yarbles works wonders.

You are wise and insightful ....

Spitting on someone .. is assault ....

It is a crime ....

One might as well grab a baseball bat and swing away: the same impulse drives both sociopathic acts ....

No ... since it is wrong for someone to spit on you, it is just as wrong for you to spit on someone else .... Tu Quoque fallacy ...

Think: Golden Rule ....

But I gotta admit: ... spitting a wad of disgusting juice on, say, Pat Robertson's awful twisted face, would be a sort of metaphysical justice ... an ugly poetry, if you will ....

6. Jane Fonda is "elderly?"
I wish me and Grammy had a date or two.

But don't chew tobacco. It's disgusting and causes oral cancer.

your first instincts are best. That being said KS might just be the state where armed resistance occurs. The more oppressive the more reaction. They are refighting the Scopes trial there. backward rubes

But reverting to our monkey-selves would somehow seem proper .... given the crazy zoo our nation has become .... Flinging feces at our rivals would seem SO right ! ...

10. I suspect that those that approve of
the pie in the face are using the same logic. Assault is assault, and should be condemned unless all else fails.

Sometimes a little revolution is a good thing. Just figuring out when that is is the trick.

15. I think they should have stuck to pies. I think the spit in the face is
lower than the pie in the face. Perhaps not as messy, but yuckier.

17. Actually the spitting incident happened
in MO and the guy was arrested and charged with assault. However, Jane Fonda declined to press charges so I suppose there is a chance the charges will be dropped.

But, he was completely in the wrong.

20. Glad to see not everyone is insane
Jane Fonda's action during the Vietnam war were REPREHENSIBLE and I think she knows that now - maybe not.... but in America.. you are free to express your opinions.. travel the world as you see fit.. and be a total butt-crack if you feel the need. My personal opinion was that she was WRONG in what she did.. and that she did not really have a clue as to what her actions would mean to some... but with that said... If I were spit on every time I offended someone.. or for asinine actions I have taken in the last 40+ years... I would be drowning in Tobacco juice.. which by the way...causes low birth weight.. and I think many others would be to..

Intelligent people do not express themselves like this.. That man had the right to call her every name in the book... to tell her he would LIKE to spit on her.. but he does not have the right to spit on her.. even if he is a Vet. I have the most respect for the people who lay their lives on the line for our country.. but that does not give them the right to infringe on the rights of others.. even scumbags like Jane Fonda.

Did he dare to spit on Nixon? Was Jane Fonda responsible for any of the 50,000 young men and millions of Vietnamese killed by that war?

22. good point!
I get your point... I agree.. she was not responsible for ANY deaths.. and I REALLY don't think she got the GRAVITY of how her actions would effect the soldiers or the nation... I think she was a hippie celebrity that got caught up in the anti-war movement but took it WAY too far.. Personally.. I am TOTALLY against what we are doing in Iraq.. it was stupid and poorly timed. Saddam needed to be ousted.. but I don't think we needed to lose more American lives to do it.. but am I gonna go pose on top of a insurgent car bomb.. (no..not a celebrity).. totally classless and tasteless.. but my guess it was the impulse action of a person that meant well ... do I boycott any of Jane's stuff... well.. besides the work out videos.. absolutely not. She is human.. and has admitted it was a mistake.. in my book she is forgiven.

23. Vietnam war
was a little different than Iraq war. It was a civil war in Vietnam and the side we were helping was a dictatorship too. The majority of the Vietnam people supported communism. We had no business there at all. Killing millions of the people just because they had a different belief was not much different from holocaust.

24. that would make you the John Brown of spit
If the other side is resorting to spit and approves of it, then we must respond in kind.

Then again, the 2/3 is only a measure of the busybodies who saw fit to write a LTTE on the subject, hardly representative of the view of the whole population, at least not necessarily.
