Evolution hearings
This week in Kansas, members of the State Board of Education plan to put evolution on trial.
Their allies in the “intelligent design” movement have scoured the globe to find people who disagree with evolution. But mainstream scientists refuse to cooperate. Why?
As a biologist, I can offer some reasons. First, the hearings are a publicity stunt to help creationist lawyers claim that evolution is controversial. The arguments won't matter; for them it's enough just to have equal numbers of “pro” and “anti” scientists on stage.
Second, the “controversy” isn't about science at all. Intelligent design supporters believe evolution supports atheism. Others disagree. But questions about meaning and purpose belong to philosophy and faith.
The political success of intelligent design shows there's a crisis in public understanding of science, not a scientific controversy.
