I'm somewhat relieved that Phill Kline isn't running, as I'm no longer sure that he's too much of a right-wing nutjob to get elected!
TOPEKA — U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun and Atty. Gen. Phill Kline, both Republicans, today said they are not going to run for governor in 2006.
For the past few days, Republicans have been jockeying for position within the GOP in hopes of challenging Gov. Kathleen Sebelius, a Democrat who is expected to seek re-election.
On Monday, House Speaker Doug Mays, R-Topeka, said he is leaning toward running for governor. Other possible candidates include Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh, State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins and Senate Majority Leader Derek Schmidt of Independence.
Asked about the movement in the GOP, Sebelius deadpanned, "It comes as a shock and disappointment that I am not going to run unopposed, if I chose to run again."
