History and geography education in KS
may be more pressing problems for the BOE than biology! The Talk Back section of the Johnson County Sun this week (May 12, 2005) contained a soundbite from an anonymous caller, including this sentence:

"You people out there who have never served our country in the military have no idea what Jane Fonda's mouth and straddling a North Korean gun means."

Hmmmm. When one is denouncing another, one should at least have the courtesy get the facts straight! I dispair of people who don't know when and where and how major events in US history occurred. I know the Korean War is largely forgotten, but it should not be. It was a brief war (in its most violent phase--the damn thing is STILL going on with just a truce in place), but cost the lives of many brave American and other UN troops. Like the Turks I once hear an American Korean War vet speak of in awe and with the highest praise.

Incidentally, I do share with the Talkbacker a very strong feeling that Jane Fonda's activities in North Vietnam showed really, really, bad judgment.

1. I'm wondering whether they'll address the teaching of geology next,
since apparently there are Christian revisionist geologists out there too.

Hydro-plate theory is too ridiculous to spend much time on. Basically the idea is that ..err...there was a whole bunch of water under the tectonic plates, and then the world sprung a leak and the whole place flooded..and then--err--it all just went away again?

2. I love Talk Back
I called once a few years ago and they printed it. Here is what I said:

I'm sorry. I was selfish. I was greedy. I was uncaring. I was a Republican.
