Sen. O'Connor sets her sights on being Kansas secretary of state
As if Kansas doesn't have enough problems with the evolution debate, Attorney General Phil Kline digging into abortion records and Sen. Brownshirt ... ooops! I mean Sen. Brownback considering a presidential bid, now we have this from that good ol' gal who thinks the 19th Amendment was a bad idea:

Kansas Sen. Kay O'Connor, the outspoken conservative who once became embroiled in a controversy over a woman's right to vote, wants to be the state's top elections official.

On Tuesday, O'Connor formed a political committee that will enable her to begin raising money for a secretary of state campaign.

<snip>

In 2001, O'Connor of Olathe was quoted in The Star as saying she did not support the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, which gave women the right to vote. She added that she would vote against it were it to be considered today.

At the time, and again Wednesday, O'Connor was critical of the story and denied making the remarks, although two women from the Johnson County League of Women Voters who overheard the remarks vouched for the story's accuracy.

1. Oh great.
Just freaking great.

Well, if we can keep that story up front I don't think she would stand a chance but then Kansas has changed so much. It seems we have been taken over, nothing would surprise me anymore.

3. How many right-wing wackjobs do we HAVE around here, anyway?
It seems as if there's suddenly a neverending supply of them. I'm thinking I should start saving NOW for my 2006 donations to candidates.

4. Thanks a lot, Mrs. O'Connor. Now I can continue to
go around saying "I live in Kansas. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry..."

Is she a dim bulb, or just plain bonkers? I can't decide, I'm just a woman.

6. Here is her exact quote
After a public meeting — attended by members of the League of Women Voters, no less — O'Connor said she would have voted against the amendment that gave women the right to vote. She now denies saying that. But her attempts at nuanced explanations are confusing to even a nuancer of my advanced skill.

“The 19th Amendment, while it's not an evil in and of itself, is a symptom of something I don't approve of,” O'Connor said later and defended that statement this week when contacted by The Associated Press.

“I will stick to my guns,” she told the AP. “I am not bashful about taking an unpopular position.”

7. And I'm not bashful about bashing her for that unpopular opinion!
Is she going to refrain from campaigning for female voters? If the fact women can vote is a sign our society is in decay, what does that say about the woman who runs for office? Isn't that a bigger abomination?

8. Heh heh. Here's a new story about her candidacy...
Think of it this way: It's as if I'm about to lose the farm — and here comes Kay O'Connor to pay off the mortgage, asking nothing in return.

No, not everyone is as happy with O'Connor's announcement this week that she wants to become Kansas secretary of state.

By that, I mean Democrats, moderate Republicans and anyone who thinks the conservative state senator from Olathe is a dangerous political force or a near-certified dingbat. Which amounts to a bunch of folks. As What's the Matter With Kansas author Thomas Frank once wrote: “She courts controversy almost every time she opens her mouth.”

But that's also why I was almost tempted to send in a campaign contribution.

O'Connor's candidacy — for this job, of all jobs — is like a gift to a columnist. Guys like me drool over stories like this the way wolverines smack their lips at the smell of roadkill.
