Post your preferred location/date/time for our next KC area meetup!
I know that this is usually Proud2BLib's area of expertise, but somehow I don't think she will mind me asking this.

I know there have been some conflicts over the last few months regarding our meetup times, evenings, and locations.

Typically we have tried to have them on the third Wednesday of the month, somewhere in the Kansas City area. Historically they have been held at Chili's (a big no-no now), the River Market Brewery, and the Westport Flea Market (great place). In June we held the meetup in Lawrence, KS (South Park, to be specific) in order to make things easier on KS DUers such as myself, Mabus, and MuseRider. Also, Muse plays there with a band every Wednesday! However, due to scheduling conflicts and potentially long commutes, we didn't get much of a turnout. Thanks to everyone who did come, however! Of course, some people did show up in Lawrence, but we completely blew them off like the assholes that we are (my apologies to greymattermom.

Anyhow, my calendar tells me that the third Wednesday of July will be next week, July 20. That gives us about eight days to plan.

Here's what I need from you, oh loyal servants... ...uh, fellow DUers, I mean.

Tell us

(1)If indeed Wednesday the 20th will work for you, and if so what time might be best (I'm pulling for 8pm). If not, please indicate what day might work better, in order that we may come to a consensus on what will be best for everyone.

(2)If indeed you will be planning on showing up. Better yet, list that first. If you don't plan on coming, we don't want your crummy suggestions anyway

(3)What type of venue/atmosphere you think would best suit our meetup. We have usually gone to bars/restaurants, but there has been much discussion about planning a picnic in a park. If you are suggesting a picnic, please indicate a possible location and let us know if you have access to a weather machine so we can have a nice, warm but not hot day. If you don't own a weather machine, you can always rent one.

(4)Suggestions for future meetups or KC DU activities.

And, as usual, any questions or complaints about anything regarding them meetup can be sent to Proud2BLib's PM inbox.

Or, just PM me.

1. FYI
Our last concert is that Wednesday. I don't know how everyone feels about coming to it but that is where I have to be that night. I just thought I would tell you, because of some of the positive responses I got, that it is the big 1812 Overture concert complete with cannons blasting, smoky air and with any luck, major fireworks. It really is the best concert we do all year from an audience standpoint. Much blasting and noise and excitement and joy that comes from that wonderful piece of work. I am anxiously looking forward to it in light of recent developments in our government. FREEDOM! Coming to all towns soon I hope.

Whatever you all decide to do, if it is not in Lawrence have fun. I will rejoin the group after this last concert for one last meetup before I start the symphony schedule.

3. Depends.

An outdoor concert in the middle of July is not everyone's cup of tea. I doubt I would ever go to one if I was not playing or going to meet a bunch of good DU friends.

I was just plugging the band for very selfish reasons.

The Kansas City Star is doing a big write up about the band in Sundays paper. Magazine? I am not too sure but they came to a rehearsal and took a bunch of pictures and we were told that there would be a story Sunday.

14. that soon?
er, I mean, that late?
I am renting transportation from Aug 4-11, thought I might be able to make a meet-up at the end of that. Of course, I am going north, and am tentatively planning to visit my hometown as well. I may change my mind when I start buying that $2.50 a gallon gas and just head straight home.
Just thinking ahead, August 10th is the 2nd Wednesday of the month.

16. Got to be local - and I don't do picnics in July or August
Sorry -
My schedule is a little wacky.
Sometimes I'm working a midnight shift, and sometimes I'm working a swing shift.
If I'm working a swing shift, usually I'm going to bail out of work at the last possible minute if I'm going to attend a meet up.

If I'm working a midnight shift, then I'm going to be attending a few hours prior to reporting to work.
Or, I'm going to take the night off to attend.

Either way, Lawrence doesn't work for me.
I'm not a picnic kind of guy either.
I hate the hot weather, and bugs piss me off.
If I want to sweat, I do it laying down.
Picnics usually also mean children, and I hate children.
Please don't let my intemperate response lead you to believe that I am not a nice person. I am.

It's just that it's 5:49 in the morning, I'm at work, and I've been here since 8:30 last night.

I believe a meet-up should be devoted to discussing politics and current events, over cold beer and semi-edible food in a cool, comforting environment.
If I wanted a picnic, I'd go to the freakin' Renaissance festival.

That's my crummy suggestion, and I got the first round.

I'm bound to be a hit with you guys...

Lib can vouch for me.

I liked that location. Just was a little loud, because of the guy playing guitar that night. But otherwise, it was a good choice I thought.

Turns out that it may be demolished and a Hooters put up in its place. No, I am not joking. Business section of the KC Star. Would that mean more or less attendance?

35. Aw, crap
I heard the rumor about Hooters taking over Westport Flea Market several months ago. It had been so long since I heard anything new that I thought it had blown over. I do not want it to happen. Didn't Johnny Dare's close? If Hooters feels like they must be in Westport, couldn't they take that location?

This makes me ill. I hope it doesn't come to pass.

26. Just an FYI
The article about The Westport Flea Market may be only so much hyperbole.

There is a board (a sports message board), local to KC that is devoted primarily to sports whack jobs like the hated Chief Fan and the woeful Royal fan.

KCFORUM.NET

Here's one of the comments from a local KC type...

"That is a damn shame. Flea market kicks ass. I may be the only guy that frequents this forum that really does not give a shit about Hooters. In fact I have only been in one once. I don't like chicken wings, and I am not a beer drinker. I also don't like trying to curry favor with slits who wouldn't give me the time of day if I met them on the street.

If I am going to get hustled from a broad, I better be getting a lap dance or a BJ, not a plate of fatty chicken wings covered in vinegar"

Nice huh?

Rumor has it that this is just a rumor.

Supposedly, Hooters had a shot at that ass wipe Johnny Dare's location before they opened but they passed.
Hooters is like Home Depot or a WAL-MART Neighborhood Grocery.
They have to have one every three miles, so the whales that shop there don't have to drive more than a few blocks to consume products that are widely available on almost every corner.

How many damn Target's and Home Depots and Borders and Price Choppers and Old Navy's and Best Buys and Circuit City's does one dead from the neck up community need?

I think that maybe I should do three things.

Not post when I'm tired.
Not post when I've only been awake twenty or so minutes.
Get a kitten or a puppy to temper my vitriol and bile filled postings.

The River Market Brewery is just OK.
Nothing to write home about.
I did like the guy with the guitar and the bluesy voice.
That was Bob Harvey.
Bob Harvey of the Bob Harvey Band.
If your name is Bob Harvey, naming your band the Bob Harvey Band is probably a pretty good idea.

Anyone that can play Steve Earle and Stevie Ray Vaughan is aces in my book.
I'm within walking distance of the RMB and I've only been there eight or nine times, so there's no loyalty there from my stand point.

I went back the following week after our meet-up and bought all of Bob's CD's and I bought him a beer or two.
Bob can play some guitar.
And he's a really nice guy.
And he told me that he thought the monkey (BUSH) was a "prick".
I like that kind of attitude.

But he's not a requirement.
Plus the food at the RMB is hardly anything to write home about.

The Flea Market is a good choice.

Is anyone familiar with the Long-branch at 95th and Metcalf?

No band, locally owned, and the wait staff is hard working and I don't think that they are owned by right wing whack jobs.

The food is roughly equivalent to the RMB.
Lot's of cheese and fried crap, but they do let you throw peanut shells all over the joint.

Lib would like that because it's like five minutes away from her.

Actually, I'm happy anywhere.
I'm jonesing to hook up with some like minded people.

"What's the matter with Kansas" indeed.

I just can't deal with being outside when it's 95 freakin' degrees.

I'm a Yankee.
I can't wait for October.

I guess when it comes down to it, my only requirement is that bugs are not involved, and there is air conditioning.

I'm really easy to please!

I still got the first round.

27. Ewwwww
those were awful to read.

I am anxious to meet you and several others I have yet to meet. Something about living here makes us fast friends quickly!

I can't wait for these concerts to be over. I use a money belt with blue ice around my waist, a bandana with blue ice in it and a little fan to try to keep myself from melting down while crammed into that gazebo playing music. It is horrible but I get paid and I get to play so it is a trade off I guess. I would not go across the street in this heat to listen to a concert even though I work outside.

Will meet you in the future months when it is Yankee cool.
