1. I saw! Grrrrr.
I mean, it's gone off the deep end lately, but I did grow up there. And my relatives are from Ellis! And they're Democrats!

5. I grew up in Wamego - near Manhattan.
Went to school at Emporia St.

Now live in Denver.

6. Hey a fellow Hornet
I went to Emporia also :)

And I know Wamego.

I was in Mankato for Christian Karoake a few weeks ago. The Red Rooster Cafe. Ever been there?

7. Yeah! Go Hornets!
I was class of 83.

The closest I've been to Mankato is Wilson. That's sorta close isn't it? My college roommate was from there.

9. Class of 78 here
We still have friends in Euphoria and go back once a year or so. It has changed - and not for the better.

Is Wilson close to Wilson Lake? I love Lucas and the Garden of Eden. That is the neatest place.

17. Good essay
But really, Emporia really has changed a lot. Especially culturally. When I lived there in the 70s, there were 3 movie theaters that are now gone. There was an amazing live music scene. National acts regularly played at the civic auditorium. There was an active local theater group.

The college also had a lab high school that had an outstanding reputation in this region.

There were bike riders everywhere. I don't think the campus even has bike racks anymore.

And when I go there today, I see neighborhoods deteriorating that were extremely well kept 30 years ago. Downtown is not the same at all. The department stores are gone. Many of the restaurants are as well. And the grocery stores - there used to be several on the main street close to campus. I don't know where the college kids shop nowadays.

19. I ' m now sort of sorry I even read this thread. I guess I was there in
a different time, many years ago. I'm upset to see that things have changed so much for the town. My memories are better, but apparently they are not the reality of today. Long ago, to my young eyes, it seemed like a super place. Not just the college, but the whole town.

18. I remember Emporia as a very nice place. Very friendly. Homecomings
with a mascot named Corky. The Hornets. A super time and place long ago in my life, with wonderful people, wonderful friends on campus. Not getting into politics here, just reminiscing.

20. I still found it to be that way
It seemed like a nicer place than Leavenworth. Leavenworth is kinda centered around the Fort, whereas Emporia is more centered around the Campus. Then again, I was only there for a couple hours. Still, the only place I have seen that met Thomas Franks' pessimistic portral of Kansas was in Russell. Even Osborne did not seem that bad, although someone whose mother lives there said the town is hurting demographically.

15. I've lived in another state for two decades, but I'm an Emporia State
grad, too. Great times!! I tried the link, but it was gone. I'm guessing it wasn't pleasant. I've only lived in two states (KS and AZ), and, unfortuately, I am always a blue state person in a red state! Yikes!!

10. You know it's funny
Where you and I live is fairly liberal. And look at Lawrence. Folks who characterize all of us Kansans as red necked fundie fools are just so damn ignorant. And I expect better of DUers (nose up in air ) - we need a smiley for that :)
