Kansas residents stranded in flash flooding
Sunday, October 2, 2005; Posted: 10:49 a.m. EDT (14:49 GMT)

OSKALOOSA, Kansas (AP) -- A storm dumped up to a foot of rain over parts of northeast Kansas early Sunday, sparking flash flooding that left people stranded in their homes and cars, emergency officials said.

The hardest hit areas were Jefferson and Jackson counties, said Joy Moser, spokeswoman for the Kansas Division of Emergency Management. About a foot of rain fell overnight in Jefferson County, and up to 10 inches was reported in Jackson County.

Jefferson County officials declared a disaster, and emergency crews were trying to rescue people stranded in the high water, said Don Haynes, the county's director of emergency service.

"The water in the creeks came up, and the homes are surrounded," Haynes said. "Who plans for this kind of rain?

1. It is nasty out there!
I am just south of there and we got 4 inches on top of 4 inches a week or so ago. It is like the tropics, warm and humid after hitting 39 a couple of nights ago and the creeks are running fast and high. I heard about this and saw some pictures. They were flooded with the last rain in the same area.

3. My family lives in Jefferson County...my boyfriends' dad being on the
fire dept. He said there were people stranded on the roof of their cars because of the flooding. Still not as bad as '93, though.
