Kansas attorney general broadens inquiry
62 birth records under scrutiny

TOPEKA — Attorney General Phill Kline has reviewed records of live births in Kansas and found 62 he suspects were the result of child sexual assault.
Kline released that information Tuesday, showing that abortion clinics are not the sole target of his investigation of child sexual assault.
He is seeking the medical records of 90 girls and women who received abortions at two Kansas clinics because he believes each record contains clues to felonies such as illegal late-term abortion and child sexual abuse.
The two clinics —– the Comprehensive Health clinic in Overland Park and the Women’s Health Care clinic in Wichita — asked the Kansas Supreme Court to intervene after a Shawnee County judge issued subpoenas at Kline’s request. The clinics said that the subpoenas were too broad and that unless the request was limited, it constituted a violation of privacy. A decision from the high court is expected this month.
